Short term scientific missions (STSMs)
These Missions (Inter-laboratory Exchange Visits) aim at strengthening the existing COST Actions by allowing scientists to go to an institution or laboratory in another COST country to foster collaboration, to learn a new technique or to take measurements using instruments and/or methods not available in their own institution/laboratory.
Application for Short term scientific missions (STSMs)
Before the mission
Step 1 (preparatory paperwork)
At least one month before the planned starting date, the candidate sends the following documents to the STSM coordinator (Giovanni Poli)

Step 2 (assessment)
The STSM is evaluated (scientific and budgetary evaluation) by the STSM coordinator on a regular basis, and, if accepted, it will be forwarded to
the CARISMA Grant Holder in Dublin (Clara Grimes).
Step 3 (grant letter)
The CARISMA Grant Holder transmits approval of the mission to the applicant via an official e-cost message, who can finalize his/her mission.
The applicant logs into e-COST, downloads the Grant Letter and returns a scanned copy via email to [email protected].
After the mission
Step 4
Within 30 days after the end of the mission, the STSM recipient will transmit a report to the STSM coordinator [copy to MC Chair and the responsible of the
host institution].
The report should include:

The STSM coordinator and/or MC Chair evaluate the report, and, if approved, they inform the Grant Holder about the successful accomplished.
Step 6
The Grant Holder executes the payment to the STSM recipient.

- Short project (2-3 pages)
- Motivation letter
- Letter of support of the home institution
- Agreement letter obtained from the responsible of the host institution mentioning period and duration of the requested STSM
- Filled on-line application - https://e-services.cost.eu/stsm (planned budget is requested)

- Purpose of the STSM;
- Description of the work carried out;
- Possible future collaboration with the host institution;
- Possible publications resulting from the STSM;
- Confirmation by the host institution of the successful execution of the STSM.
Step 5
The STSM coordinator and/or MC Chair evaluate the report, and, if approved, they inform the Grant Holder about the successful accomplished.
Step 6
The Grant Holder executes the payment to the STSM recipient.
